Stone pools hidden in a canyon, reached on foot

Deep in Hringsgil canyon near Húsafell, two hand-built stone pools sit beside a waterfall-fed stream. The only way in is a short guided walk, and no more than sixteen people go at a time.

Why it’s worth the drive

Húsafell sits at the edge of the Highlands, between the Langjökull glacier and the lava fields of Hallmundarhraun. Since 2019 its best-kept secret has been the Canyon Baths: two geothermal pools built into the rocky floor of Hringsgil canyon, where you can’t drive, and can’t go without a guide.

The tour starts with a short minibus ride from the Húsafell activity centre, then an easy walk of around a kilometre and a half, past the two-tiered Langifoss waterfall, and 64 steps down into the canyon. On the way the guide tells the story of Ok, the nearby mountain whose glacier became the first in Iceland to be lost to climate change.

“The coat hooks are horseshoes from a neighbouring farm.”

The pools themselves are a love letter to local craft. They were built the same way as Snorralaug, the medieval pool at Reykholt, with flagstones from the canyon floor; the little bathhouse is made from salvaged local timber, and the coat hooks are horseshoes from a neighbouring farm. The water runs between 30 and 41°C, with nothing but the canyon walls and the sound of the stream.
