For twenty years, Mývatn Nature Baths was the north’s answer to the Blue Lagoon: a milky, mineral-rich pool on a hillside above Lake Mývatn, quieter, cheaper and wilder than its famous cousin. In January 2026 it closed for a full rebuild, and in July it reopened under a new name, Earth Lagoon Mývatn.
The water still comes from the Bjarnarflag borehole nearby. It arrives at around 130°C and is cooled to bathing temperature. It is naturally alkaline and rich in sulphur and minerals, and it needs no chlorine. The lagoon surface has grown by around a third and now winds in three sections around a tuff island, through fissure-like passages modelled on the nearby lava caves of Grjótagjá and Stóragjá.
“During construction the builders came across a natural cave, which became the swim-in steam cave.”
The new building uses stone dug out on site for its walls, cladding and terrazzo floors, and is built around the existing lava. During construction the builders came across a natural cave, which became the swim-in steam cave. There are new hot tubs, a waterfall, a bigger swim-up bar, and massages for the first time.
