Geothermal seawater on a clifftop above whale country

Perched on Húsavíkurhöfði headland above Skjálfandi Bay, GeoSea fills its infinity pools with mineral-rich geothermal seawater. On a good day you can watch whales from the water.

Why it’s worth the drive

Húsavík is Iceland’s whale-watching capital, and GeoSea has the best seat in town. The baths sit on the headland just north of the harbour, with infinity edges facing Skjálfandi Bay and the snowy Kinnarfjöll mountains on the far side.

The water is geothermal seawater from boreholes drilled on the headland. The boreholes were drilled decades ago to heat the town’s houses, but the water was too mineral-rich for the pipes. Instead, locals started bathing in it in an old cheese barrel on the cliff. GeoSea, which opened in 2018, turned that habit into a proper set of baths.

“Infinity edges facing Skjálfandi Bay, and whales if you’re lucky.”

The water is full of minerals and slightly saline, the setting is wide open and the light changes all the time. In June the sun barely sets, and on clear winter nights the aurora dances over the bay.
