Eight hot springs on the shore, rising and falling with the tide

On a historic estate in Hvalfjörður, the Whale Fjord, eight natural hot pools sit right on the shoreline. As the tide comes in, the ocean pours into some of them, and the lowest one disappears under the sea altogether.

Why it’s worth the drive

Hvammsvík is an old farm estate on the southern shore of Hvalfjörður, forty-five minutes from Reykjavík. It turns up in Landnámabók, the medieval book of Iceland’s settlement, and during the Second World War the fjord was an Allied naval base. Today it’s a family-owned estate with a geothermal well of its own, and the hot water feeds eight pools along the beach.

This is the closest thing to bathing in wild hot springs with proper changing rooms. The pools range from about 35 to 42°C, and the ones nearest the sea change temperature with the tide: at high water the Tidal Pool vanishes under the Atlantic, then reappears as the sea pulls back. Between hot pools you can wade straight into the fjord.

“At high water the Tidal Pool vanishes under the Atlantic, then reappears as the sea pulls back.”

There’s a swim-up bar in the Lounge Pool, a new Finnish sauna and a steam room looking out over the fjord, and Stormur Bistro for seafood soup afterwards. Admission includes extras you won’t find elsewhere, from Wim Hof breathing sessions and guided ocean swims to summer paddle boarding.
